Plan for pitfalls

Being caught off guard can sometimes sabotage even your best intentions. So can holding on to old habits.

Proactively plan for pitfalls before they happen and ease out of bad habits little by little – it’s less daunting.

  • Step 1: Recognize and define your challenge.
You drive home from work past your favorite fast food restaurant, and you find it impossible to resist the drive-thru. It’s convenient and quick. And by late afternoon, you’re starving.

  • Step 2: Set expectations.
Allow yourself to stop once a week. Pick the day. Plan your order. Look forward to it -- without feeling guilty.

  • Step 3: Identify solutions.
    • Check the map and find an alternate route home from work that won’t take you past that temple of temptation.
    • Curb your hunger en route with a healthy snack like fruit, granola bar or sliced veggies.

  • Step 4: Trial and practice.
Take your new solution for a spin for one week.

  • Step 5: Evaluate.
How did it go? Is your new route home less crowded? Does a pre-planned late afternoon snack make a difference? If it’s working, great! If it’s not working, find the flaw and try a new solution.
