Embrace Change

Face your fears

A lot of times, we lose weight for special occasions – vacations, weddings, reunions. When the party’s over, so are the good habits.

For years, the numbers on the scale yo-yo up and down. We expect the inconsistency. (Most of us even have wardrobes to outfit it.) Nothing ever changes.

Why? Change scares the jeebies out of most of us. Acknowledging the fears you may have about change is important because those feelings can have a hefty impact on your success. Surprising as it may be, there can be some scary things about changing for good, even if it the change you’re making is positive. Don’t be afraid to face those fears.

Heavy stuff! But dealing with your fears can be a big key to success for real change.

  1. 1. Why are you changing?
Get yourself some paper to get to know yourself.

Draw a line down the middle, then label two columns:

    Why Change? Why Not Change?

Do the items in the “Why Change” column trump those in the “Why Not” column? If so, you’re ready to change for good. Beware: Your “why nots” can derail you even if your reasons for change are rock solid. Come up with a plan to combat them now.

  2. 2. Who is the new you, really?
What will it mean to be at the weight you’ve always wanted? How will you feel? Let yourself experience some positive and negatives and have time to get used to the idea of what a “new you” will mean.
  3. 3. How have you handled changes in the past?
Think about a major life change you had. List some of the feelings you had during that experience. Emotions like these are normal – frustration, disappointment, glee, guilt, self-centeredness.
